Manuel Antonio Kayak Tour
Paddle silently through the mangroves. Wildlife approaches when you move as quietly as the water.
Paddle Through the Mangroves of Manuel Antonio
There's something intimate about exploring the mangroves by kayak. The silence of your approach, the closeness of the canopy overhead, the mirror-still water reflecting the tangle of mangrove roots. Kayaking transforms a wildlife tour into something closer to a meditation. Animals that would flee from a motorboat often stay perfectly still as you glide past in a kayak, giving you the kind of close encounters that feel unscripted.
Our Manuel Antonio kayak tour takes you into the mangrove channels near Quepos in stable, easy-to-handle sit-on-top kayaks. No experience is needed. Your guide provides all the instruction you need to paddle comfortably and will be with the group throughout. The route is chosen for maximum wildlife encounters, never too deep or too exposed.
The mangroves are alive with sound and movement. Amazon and ringed kingfishers dart between the overhanging branches. Green iguanas bask on sun-warmed roots at water level. Overhead, troops of white-faced capuchin monkeys move through the mangrove canopy, occasionally stopping to peer curiously at the paddlers below. And in the still pools between the roots, you might spot the slow, ancient shape of an American crocodile lying motionless.
The route passes through genuine mangrove tunnels, sections where the canopy meets overhead and you paddle through a green-filtered, cathedral-like space you won't find on any boat tour. These are the moments that make the mangrove kayak tour stand out, something no boat tour can offer.
The tour is conducted in small groups of maximum 10 paddlers, guided by an ICT-certified naturalist who provides ecological commentary about the mangrove ecosystem, its importance as a nursery for marine species, its role in coastal protection, and the wildlife that depends on it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need kayaking experience for this tour?
No experience needed. Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and easy to paddle. Your guide will give a brief paddling lesson at the start and will be with the group throughout to assist anyone who needs help. This tour is genuinely suitable for beginners, including children old enough to paddle (typically 7+).
Will I get wet on the kayak tour?
You may get splashed from paddling, and the kayak seats can get wet. We recommend bringing a change of clothes, wearing a swimsuit or quick-dry clothing, and bringing a small waterproof bag for electronics and valuables. Bringing your camera/phone in a waterproof case is strongly advised.
Is kayaking better or worse than the boat tour for wildlife?
Both have advantages. Kayaking is slower and quieter, so you can approach wildlife more closely without startling them. The boat tour covers more ground and is better for spotting crocodiles at distance. Many guests choose to do both. The experiences work well together.
