The Pacific Ocean off Quepos and Manuel Antonio sits at the convergence of powerful currents that create exceptional marine productivity. The Costa Rica Dome, a natural upwelling feature driven by wind-driven divergence in the eastern Pacific, pushes cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. This upwelling supports enormous concentrations of baitfish and the big game species that hunt them.
The result: sailfish densities off Quepos that are among the highest recorded anywhere in the world. On peak days, it's not unusual for a skilled captain to find groups of 50+ sailfish corralling baitfish on the surface. Blue and black marlin reach record sizes in these waters. Yellowfin tuna schools stretching for miles. Wahoo in the current breaks. Mahi-mahi around floating debris.
